http://happyhandyman.net demonstrates how much hydrogen gas production it takes to run a 4-runner. A minutes worth of production is stored in a balloon, then diverted into the plenum and only runs the motor for a few seconds. We have a long way to go and it looks like the next step is car computers that are programmed to optimize on HHO Gas.
Why does an array of HHO fuel cells improve gas mileage…only sometimes? Because pure Hydrogen and Oxygen gas (40/60 by volume at atmospheric pressure) enhances combustion efficiency to a point. At some point, the increased heat from hydrogen burning at temperatures similar to 135, car computers respond by dumping more gasoline into the fuel mixture in order to cool the motor. Then mileage goes down.
